I am reading the book “Tar Sands” by Andrew Nikiforuk. He talks about Donald Blake, an air pollution expert– In an area called ‘Upgrader Alley”, he took 70 whole-air samples in 2006 and found pollution levels five times higher than those recorded in Texas. The pollution also surpassed levels found in 43 of China’s most polluted cities. He found concentrations of ethane and benzene 50 times greater than elsewhere in the region, indicating massive leaks as well as a health hazard to refinery workers.

Meanwhile, the results of air monitoring done by the Fort Air Partnership , an industry group, and Environment Canada’s reports showed there was nothing to worry about. However, their monitoring stations were conveniently located 3 to 6 miles downwind where ‘you will always find low values’. Fort Air Partnership was also staffed by volunteers. And according to two Alberta Environment audits, it has equipment that is rated as ‘dirty or malfunctioning’. Blake says that such third-rate efforts reek of coverup and sleight of hand.

I am happy that there is now an MP in parliament that is willing to question the ecological devastation that is occurring in the heartland of Canada. I hope there are others who are willing to join the fight with you Elizabeth.

Interesting also is that a delegation from KAIROS had visited the Tar sands 2 consecutive years to grasp exactly how this initiative is impactiving the loacl environment and first nations communities. When the expressed a desire to meet with the federal governent to try an mediate, negotiate solutions, suddenly their funding was cut. Coincidence, I think not.

Six months after Lunn ordered the leaking NRC restarted we the leaks got so much worse it had to be shut down for a year long patch up.nnThat gave us a year long reality check on hysterical claims about a “world wide medical isotope crisis”.nnWho died or suffered adverse health outcomes during that year because of the alleged crisis?nnThe only reports from outside Canada during that year were reference to Canadian stories.nnMost of the stories from inside Canada were reports of Nuclear Medicine Clinics having to pay more to purchase isotopes from foreign reactors. Other stories reported that that clinics were producing their own technetium-99 themselves by restarting cyclotrons they already had, or by building or buying new cyclotrons, which are about the size of a bar fridge.n
